Interview January 2005

Mampi Swift - Charge Recordings

Q- Can you remember your 1st public appearance and if so what was it like?
A-it was at Lazerdrome in London Nye brilliant rave!!!

Q- How did you get you your first big break in the scene?
A
- Kool fm was what got me to an audience!

Q- If you were to collaborate with anyone, who would it be?
A- Blame.

Q- What was your back up plan in life if you weren’t doing this?
A- No back up plan!!! I had belief in what I was doing!

Accelerated Culture Awards are now just a memory….

Q- When playing out to a large audience such as AC Awards what are you thinking about?
A
- Making people dance I don’t think there’s anything else I should be thinking about.

Q- What are you feelings about coming runner up at AC Awards?
A
- It’s great to be recognised for what i do! it would be great to win an award but I don’t DJ for awards I DJ to make people dance so I am happy to be where I am in my career at the mo! And will get better and better!

Q- Have you a plan of action for 2005 to gain more of a following?
A- No! You can only do what u do to your best capabilities! if the press don’t want to talk to u or about you. You can’t force them! So ill continue to work hard for my reasons which are not getting in magazines!

Q- Sometimes people criticise you for your tune selection…  What makes you decide one tune over another?
A- hahaha!! I never knew this maybe u criticise my tune selection! To be honest if I’m playing out and people ain’t dancing then I’ve got probs, you can’t please everybody in a club unfortunately. if you come to hear Mampi Swift your gonna get what Mampi Swift is in to I wont play music I’m not into, basically I’m happy with how I DJ, and the music I play and so are the people that like Mampi Swift!!

Q- Do you find it easier at a club night level to play out or larger events?
A- Different vibe but there’s no easier or harder about it! With clubs u can play deeper than at big raves that’s the only difference.

Q- Being a regular on the Dnb scene for so long would you have done anything different?
A
- Not that I can think of rite now!!

Q- If so what and if not how come?

A- As I said I’m happy with what I do, any mistakes I have made which would be to do with my label I don’t regret because I wouldn’t learn from them! You can only move forward!

Q- If a promoter offered an undisclosed sum to play a liquid set for instance would it be something you would be interested in doing? Or even what would you choose if asked to play a different set?
A- If I was booked to liquid id be just as excited as I get every weekend!    I LOVE DNB!!! SIMPLE!!! The one disappointing thing for me is that there shouldn’t be a question it should all be under 1 roof! You have to realise that we only DJ for one hr. this isn’t enough time. If we played for longer you’d hear slightly different tunes than what u would in an hr!
