Interview September 2004

DJ Marky

Q - How long have you been involved with DnB?
A- I’ve been involved with drum & bass for over ten years in Brasil

Q- Can you remember your first public appearance and if so what was it like?
A- I’ve been mixing since I was a kid!  I can’t remember my very first time in public, but I remember that I always loved performing, from very young.

Q- How did you get your first big break in the scene?
A- In the Brasilian scene it was working in a record shop in Sao Paulo, but my first BIG break was when the Movement guys gave me a chance in the UK.  The first time there was amazing, and it went from there – it took a long time though, even once I’d started playing at Movement.

Q- What tune are you feeling at the minute?
A- Loads of tunes!  One Logistics tune coming out on Innerground , “Front to Back” is baaad!

Q- If you were to collaborate with anyone who would it be?
A- Too many man, so many musicians, producers, writers I’d love to collaborate with.  I always wanted to work with Gilberto Gil before, and I was lucky enough to do that on a track on ‘In Rotation’, mine and XRS’ album.  He was amazing to work with..

Q- Most Memorable moment of 2004??
A- Playing at the Skolbeats festival in my home town, Sao Paulo was amazing.

Q- what do you want to achieve by close of 2004
A- I want to have built up my label, Innerground Records, really get it moving and shaking, we’ve got some great stuff coming on there – so watch out!

Q- Who do you rate as an MC?
A- I like a lot of MCs, but especially Stamina, Cleveland Watkiss, Fats.

Q- Who do you rate as a DJ?
A- Zinc, Fabio, Bryan Gee, Ed Rush, there’s lots of good DJs.

Q- What was your back up plan in life if you weren’t doing this?
A- I never thought I would do anything other than music.

Q- Would you ever do top of the pops?
A- I’ve been on top of the pops!  When LK came out they invited us on, and I went on there with Stamina – it was funny, we had the whole crew down there  J

Q- Who wouldn’t you work with??
A- I would work with anyone as long as they and I were both passionate about the music we were making.

Q- Favourite venue?
A- My favourite place to play is Lov.e in Sao Paulo, it’s my residency and it’s such a great place to play, it’s a really loyal crowd and everybody knows each other – a real family vibe!

Q- Playing next??
A- I have a few more gigs to play in Manaus, Sao Paulo and a few others in Brasil before I come over to the UK to tour all through the second half of August.  While I’m in the UK I’m playing at Movement, Swerve, Creamfields, Honeycomb in Edinburgh, and Grace amongst others.  The one I’m most looking forward to though is on Bank Holiday Monday of Carnival Weekend, I’m putting on an Innerground night @ Plastic People.  There’s going to be me, Zinc, Nu:Tone, Influx UK, Chris Intaface, LeBrun, Stamina MC and  Cleveland Watkiss.   It’s going to be a big night!!

Q- Where you going on holiday this year?
A- I haven’t got time for a holiday!!

Q- Finally have you anything you want to plug?
A- Look out for the “In Rotation Summer Pack” EP coming out in September on Innerground Records.  And Innerground @ Plastic People!!
